Guruvayur
is
one of the most famous Sree Krishna
temples in India. The divine idol
installed here represents the
world–
enchanting form of Sree
Krishna endowed with the four
lustrous
arms carrying the conch,
the discus, the mace and the
lotus.
Adorned with the divine `Thulasi’
garland and pearls necklaces,
the
idol represents the majestic form of
Maha Vishnu as
revealed to Vasudeva
and Devaki at the time of
'Krishnavathara'.
Jewish
Synagogue
Built
in 1568 AD, the Synagogue still has
the sacred scrolls of the Old
Testament and the copper plates,
which recorded the grants of
privilege bequeathed by the Kochi
rulers. The exquisite hand painted
blue Chinese tiles are another
interesting sight. Not one of the
nearly two hundred year old tiles
resembles another. There are also
several finely wrought gold and
silver criwns gifted to the
Synagogue by various patrons.
One
of the most important Hindu temples
of Kerala. The
sanctum sanctorum
nestles 914m from sea level, amidst
the
virgin forest wilderness of the
Western Ghats. Transportation is
available only up to Pamba, from
where one has to travel a
distance
of 5 Km by foot. Devotees undertake
rigorous penance,
ritualistic vows
and fasts before they visit the
temple.
Cheraman
Mosque
The
first Mosque in India, Cheraman Juma
Masjid was built in 629 AD.
It
resembles a Hindu Temple in
architectural design. Legend has it
that the
Mosque was built by Hindu
artisans on the decree of Raja of
Kodungalloor.
People of all
religions come to pray at this holy
shrine. Ramadan and Bakrid are
the
main festivals.
